Characterization: Pompey and Mistress Overdone: Critical commentary (Act I, Scene II)

Pompey and Mistress overdone are low class characters who are intended to provide comic elements in the play. Lucio, though a gentleman, is familiar with both of them because he is in the habit of frequenting Mistress Overdone’s brothel. By his association with such characters, Lucio degrades himself in our eyes. Even Claudio discredits himself in our eyes by his intimacy with Lucio who is a man of a dissolute character. Claudio is, however, far more respectable than Lucio.
