Plot-developments: Critical commentary (Act I, Scene II)

From the conversation between Mistress Overdone and a couple of gentlemen, we learned that Claudio has been arrested under Angelo’s orders on a charge of having having made a girl, Juliet, pregnant without having first marred her. Claudio has been sentenced to death according to the law for having committed this immortal deed. Later in this scene, Claudio himself tells a friend, Lucio, the circumstances in which he was arrested and sentenced to death. He also asks Lucio to inform his sister Isabella about the sentence of death against him and to request Isabella to Meet Angelo and try to have him pardoned by Angelo (who is now ruling the country as the Duke’s deputy).
